Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?

We are located at 29-10th Street in the heart of Downtown Brandon, Manitoba. We've lived most of our lives here, we've raised our kids here and we're so proud to call this our home and serve this community.

Do you really bake your breads fresh everyday?

We do indeed! We believe that our breads and pastries are best when baked fresh, from-scratch and taken home the same day. They have a shorter shelf life than some of our other selections so we want to get them in your hands as close as possible to the time when they come out of the oven.

Any breads that don't sell within 24 hours of being baked are pulled from our shelves and donated to local charities.

Can I place a pre-order?

Heck yeah! You can see our upcoming menu here .

We also make some pretty fabulous cakes, and you have a lot of options in that department. You can place a custom cake order here .

Do you buy locally?

Supporting local growers and producers is precisely what we do, whenever possible, with a focus on supporting family-run operations. We want you to know that we do everything we can to keep your dollars right here in Westman whenever possible. Here is just a sampling of the items that we have been able to source in Manitoba:

  • Flour and grains
  • Milk, butter, cream and cheese
  • Beer
  • Eggs
  • All kinds of veggies and herbs
  • Mushrooms
  • Apples and berries

Some things just aren't available in Manitoba, like chocolate, olives or bananas. And sometimes the growing season in Manitoba is short and we wish to bring you greater availability than what our local market can provide. So, in short, here's our philosophy for purchasing:

  • Buy from local, family-run businesses, then
  • Buy from Manitoba producers, and if we can't we
  • Buy from other Canadian sources, and finally
  • We do our best to source from ethically, sustainable producers.

Why don't you have my favorite thing on your menu all the time?

Some things are just best served when they're in season. We make every effort to bring you the best ingredients from local producers, which means that availability varies from time-to-time.

We also do our best to keep our costs down as much as possible. At certain times of the year, some ingredients get much pricier and it is hard for a small business to absorb those costs. Rather than increasing our prices, we instead choose other menu items to bring you variety.

But don't worry, if it's a good one, we'll bring it back!

I have this allergy...

Please ask! Our products are prepared in a kitchen that frequently handles dairy products, nuts, wheat products and a variety of other basic ingredients. We will do our best to help get you the information you need so that you can make a decision as to whether or not it's appropriate for your diet.

Can you bake a cake for a celiac?

Cakes and other baking can be tricky when cooking for folks who live with celiac disease.

We are currently investigating the possibility of acquiring an additional location where we can bake and package products in an environment without gluten products. At this time, due to the high standards required to certify a product as gluten free, we only offer "Gluten Friendly" prodcuts.

What do you mean by "Gluten Friendly"?

We have a wide variety of products that contain no wheat products whatsoever. However, the same kitchen used to prepare those products is also used to prepare our other baked goods which do contain a variety of wheat and other grain products. For this reason, if you are trying to avoid gluten for dietary reasons rather than for medical issues, there is a large chance that these products will work for you. If you have an adverse reaction to wheat products, if you have allergies to grains and grain products or you live with celiac disease, we caution that we can't say for certain that there aren't traces of these in the foods we prepare.

I have a high sensitivity to corn products. Do you have anything I can eat?

Yes! But unfortunately our product selection may be limited. We can say for certain that our Wheat City Sourdough is likely your best option - it's made from flour, salt and water. There is no commercial yeast and we add no preservatives. Please be aware that we only have one kitchen, so if you are sensative at an evironmental level please take care.

Do you use commercial yeast?

Some of our breads, including our signature Wheat City Sourdough, contain no commercial yeast at all. In order to leaven the bread we use a starter that was built with our own special blend of locally-milled flour. We allow the dough to ferment over the course of many hours, sometimes as long as two days! This lengthened leavening process is what allows us to develop rich flavours and delicious, shiny bubbles in our bread. We also have many quick breads and baked goods that do use commercial yeast. If you're unsure, or would like to know on a specific item, please give us an ask!

Can I place a custom order for today?

We take great pride in baking everything in our shop from scratch. In order to meet a specific need, that means we need at least a few days to prepare a made-to-order item. There may be a selection of goods that meets your needs, though, as we do bake some extra items to fill out our batches. Please give us a call to see what might be available on short notice.

Can you do a cake with Cinderella? Or Lightening McQueen? Or Buzz Lightyear and the Minions from that Despicable movie?

We are not licenced to use copyrighted materials and take this very seriously. It is illegal to use those likenesses without a licence, and unfortunately many copyright holders do not deal with independant bakeries. We can make use of cake-toppers, for instance, or we can even leave room for you to add favors at home. Ask, and we'll do our best to accomodate!
